My students told me, in the States you usually warm up the engine while scraping off the ice and defrosting all windows. Don't do this here in Germany. Don't even try it. Warming up the engine just for melting the ice on your windshield (even worse: running the engine and have a cup of coffee in your house) is illegal and for shure will lead to contacts with the local police. One out of hundert of your neigbours who sees your "environemental offence" will call the police.... |

This is what the law says : You remove ice and snow on your car (including the snow on the roof) so that nothing obstructs your view through all the windows without running the engine. You may not run the engine without any purpose (to drive is a purpose, to warm up is not) You only may warm-up the engine, if otherwise the ice can not be removed (e.g. after a so-called Eisregen - icy rain). Warming-up the engine can be fined. |

This is what you do: You scrape off the ice from all windows without running the engine. Then you start the engine and set off and you can be happy because you did, as the germans do. For scraping off the ice more successfully, you may get perfect designed tools at every gas station or at many shops for almost nothing (two to five marks).... |

My comment: First, it is really better for the engine to start right away. The engine reaches its normal temperature the fastest. Cold oil just does not lubricate so well. |

Second: Warming up the engine is in Germany a big "NO NO". We seem to be pretty passionate in scraping the ice without running the engine. In the course of many years we developed beautiful and tricky personal methods to be very efficient. Unfortunately there will be the one or other, who thinks, if he spends all the time and effort to get the windows clean, other should do so too.... |

Here is what I do in wintertime: Normally I do not run the engine while scraping ice off the window. However, if it is real cold outside and my breath could turn into ice on the inside of the windshield, I start the engine, put the fan on max, close alle air-outlet in the dashboard and set the control for directing the airstream to the top: Best defrosting. Then I remove the ice from all windows. This could be already illegal and resulting in a conflict with the law, but seems to be tolerated by my neigbours. I just hope, it stays that way.... |
