Zwei-Mark-Stücke

This is not a history lesson. It represents only my personal opinion and should function as a little general overview with just a few facts. Maybe it gets you interested in our history. Then you learned some facts to ask friends or colleagues or you may enter the names into search engines...

Did you notice, that we have various versions of two-Mark-coins? In total six different ones. Have a look to your small change collection.... The front side is the same, but the backside shows different heads from politicians who dominated a certain aera of the federal republic of germany. Today I want to present the last two coins.	Haben Sie schon bemerkt, dass wir verschiedene Zwei-Mark-Stücke haben? Insgesamt sechs verschiedene. Schauen Sie mal in Ihre Kleingeld-Sammlung..... Die Vorderseite ist identisch, aber die Rückseite zeigt verschiedene Köpfe von Politikern, die eine bestimmte Ära der Bundesrepublik Deutschland dominiert haben. Heute will ich die letzten zwei Münzen vorstellen.
Willy Brandt (1913-1992)	Franz Joseph Strauss (1915-1988)
Both were dominating politicians on Germany's way into the 70ties and 80ties.	Beide waren dominierende Politiker auf Deutschlands Weg in die Siebziger und Achtziger.
Franz Joseph Strauss was a constant factor in german politics from the fifities to the eighties. He was always present in various functions but he never was chancelor or president.	Franz Joseph Strauss war ein konstanter Faktor in der deutschen Politik von den Fünfzigern bis in die Achtziger. Er war immer da - in verschiedenen Funktionen, war aber nie Präsident oder Kanzler.
He definetely emotionalized the people. You were either a fan of him or a total oppononent. For him or against him - there was nothing else. He had an unbelievable instinct for power and for political chances and the diplomacy of a bull in the china shop. However: He survived all scandals - and there were quite a few.	Er hat tatsächlich die Leute emotionalisiert. Man war entweder ein Fan oder totaler Gegner von ihm. Für ihn oder gegen ihn, sonst war da nichts. Er hat einen unglaublichen Instinkt für Macht und politische Chancen gehabt und die Diplomatie eines Elefanten im Porzellan-Laden. Allerdings: Er hat alle Skandale überstanden - und da hat es einige gegeben.
He was secretary for the defense in the late fifties and sixties. In his time were all the emotional discussions about function, strategy and quality of our new army, the Bundeswehr, and the endless debates about their arms and equipment.	Er war Verteidigungs-Minister in den 50ern und 60ern. In seiner Zeit wurden die aufgeladenen Debatten über Funktion, Strategie und Qualität unserer neuen Armee, der Bundeswehr, geführt - ebenso wie die endlosen Diskussionen über Bewaffnung und Ausrüstung.
In 1962 the famous "Spiegel"-scandal. "Spiegel" is and was a critical weekly news magazine, that published details about our defense. Strauss threw some journalists into jail - for some days. The way we handled the scandal shows me that we learned a big lesson towards living democracy.	1962 der berühmte Spiegel-Skandal. "Spiegel" ist und war ein kritisches wöchentliches Nachrichtenmagazin, das Details über unsere Verteidigung veröffentlichte. Strauss hat ein paar Journalisten verhaften lassen - für ein paar Tage. Die Art, wie wir mit dem Skandal umgegangen sind, zeigt mir, dass wir doch eine wichtige Lektion auf dem Weg zur gelebten Demokratie gelernt haben.
After Erhard resigned, there were no dominating heads in the conservative CDU anymore. Franz Joseph Strauss from its sister party in bavaria, the so-called CSU, filled out this gap. Conservative and totally pro-west oriented he was the toughest critician to all SPD-governments.	Nach Erhards Rücktritt hat es keine dominierenden Köpfe in der konservativen CDU mehr gegeben. Franz Joseph Strauss von der bayerischen Schwesterpartei CSU hat diese Lücke ausgefüllt. Konservativ und absolut prowestlich orientiert, ist er der schärfste Kritiker der SPD gewesen.
This is how Strauss influenced politics even till now: Chancelor Helmut Kohl's most important decision for his own career was the support for Strauss as candidate for chancelor 1980. Since Strauss did not take his chance - he lost versus Helmut Schmidt - the rivalty Strauss-Kohl was decided. In favour of Kohl.... From now on Strauss could be a tough critician to Kohl, but Kohl was the number one in the CDU. As we know he should remain chancelor for 1982 till 1998.	So hat Strauss sogar die Politik bis heute beeinflusst: Kanzler Helmut Kohls wichtigste Entscheidung für seine eigene Karriere war die Unterstützung für Strauss als Kanzlerkandidat 1980. Weil Strauss seine Chance nicht wahrgenommen hat - er hat gegen Helmut Schmidt verloren - war die Rivalität Strauss-Kohl entschieden. Von jetzt an konnte Strauss ein scharfer Kritiker für Kohl sein, aber Kohl war die Nummer eins in der CDU. Wie wir wissen, sollte er dann Kanzler 1982 bis 1998 bleiben.
with his death in 1988 we all lost: The CDU/CSU a popular, emotional and loud politician and a critical voice and the SPD lost their favourite political opponent. Their fights of SPD politicians with FJS were famous....	Mit seinem Tod 1988 haben wir alle verloren. Die CDU/CSU eine kritische Stimme und einen populären, lauten und emotionalen Politiker und und die SPD ihren Lieblingsgegner. Die Kämpfe der SPD Politiker mit Strauss waren berühmt....
Franz Joseph Strauss is the example that you can do a lot for your country even when you are not chancelor or president. Willy Brandt was an example for how much you can do for your country in such a short time.	Franz Joseph Strauss war ein Beispiel dafür, dass man viel für sein Land tun kann ohne Kanzler oder Präsident zu sein. Willy Brandt war ein Beispiel dafür wie viel man für sein Land in so kurzer Zeit tun kann.
Willy Brandt was the governing mayor of West Berlin in the sixties and our chancelor from 1969 to 1974.	Willy Brandt war der regierende Bürgermeister von Berlin (West) in den Sechzigern und unser Bundeskanzler 1969 bis 1974.
For twenty years, Germany was governed by conservatives from the CDU. In this time we were totally integrated in the western world and a western europe that started to grow together. But in the end of the sixties the time came to change the conservative society and open it to new thoughts. The time came to think over our politics towards the east. Willy Brandt as chancelor was a lucky moment for us in that time!	Zwanzig Jahre lang wurde Deutschland von Konservativen der CDU regiert. In dieser Zeit wurden wir total in eine westliche Welt integriert und in ein West-Europa, das gerade angefangen hat, zusammen zu wachsen. Aber Ende der Sechziger ist die Zeit gekommen, diese konservative Gesellschaft zu verändern und für neue Gedanken zu öffnen. Die Zeit ist auch gekommen, um unsere Politik gegenüber dem Osten zu überdenken. In dieser Zeit war Willy Brandt als Kanzler ein Glücksfall für Deutschland.
Famous is his visit to Poland in 1970. At the jewish monument in the ghetto, where he asked for forgiveness for the cruels of the Nazis, he fell on his knees. The pictures went around the world. See below.	Berühmt ist sein Besuch in Polen 1970. Am jüdischen Mahnmal im Ghetto, wo er um die Vergebung für die Grausamkeiten der Nazis gebeten hatte, ist er auf die Knie gegangen. He accepted the existence of a second german state and was the first chancelor to visit east Germany in 1971. He started a "normalization" process for our relations to the east to overcome the cold war piece-by-piece - without giving up a bit of West Germany's western orientation. The german society turned to be much more liberal and tolerant.	Willy Brandt hat die Existenz von zwei deutschen Staaten akzeptiert und war der erste Kanzler, der 1971 die DDR besucht hat. Er hat einen für unsere Ost-Beziehungen einen Normalisierungs-Prozess eingeleitet, um so Stück für Stück den Kalten Krieg zu überwinden, ohne auch nur ein Stückchen der westdeutschen Westintegration aufzugeben. Die deutsche Gesellschaft ist wesentlich liberaler und toleranter geworden.
He did and caused all that in only five years. The theme for his chancelorship: "Lets risk more democracy!" Too bad, that an east german spy - Günther Guillaume, positioned directly in his office - caused him to take the political responsibility and hand over the government to Hellmut Schmidt.	Das alles hat er in nur fünf Jahren geschafft. Das Motto seiner Kanzlerschaft: "Mehr Demokratie wagen!" Wirklich schade, dass ein ostdeutscher Spion - Günther Guillaume, direkt in Brandts Büro platziert - ihn veranlasst hat, seine politische Verantwortung zu übernehmen und die Regierung an Helmut Schmidt weiterzugeben.
Helmut Schmidt is missing on our coins - although he would have disserved it. But he is still alive and so I wish him many more years in a Germany, where we all pay not in Marks anymore but in EURO. Hellmut Schmidt started this 1978 together with Giscard d'Estaing by bundling Mark Franc, Lira and some other currencies into a european currency system with almost fixed exchange rates and only little tolerances. Twenty years later this system lead into the EURO....	Helmut Schmidt fehlt auf unseren Münzen - obwohl er es verdient hätte. Allerdings lebt er noch und so wünsche ich ihm viele weitere Jahre in einem Deutschland, in dem man nicht mehr in Mark, sondern in EURO bezahlt. Das hat Schmidt 1978 zusammen mit Giscard d'Estaing angefangen, indem er Mark, Franc, Lira und noch ein paar Währungen zu einem Europäischen Währungssystem mit fast festen Wechselkursen und nur ganz kleinen Toleranzzonen zusammengeführt hat. Zwanzig Jahre später hat das System zum EURO geführt....
I hope you enjoyed this little excursion into 50 years of Germany on hand of our two-Mark-coins. It may be not a bad idea to collect one of each as a nice souvenir, since they will be replaced by EURO-coins in 2002!	Ich hoffe, Ihnen hat dieser Mini-Ausflug in 50 Jahre Geschichte der Bundesrepublik an Beispielen der 2-Mark-Stücke gefallen. Es ist vielleicht keine schlechte Idee, jeweils eines davon als Souvenir zu behalten, weil diese Münzen ab 2002 von EURO-Münzen abgelöst werden!
